Event Four

The REPORT

A brilliant turnout at the Ballyclare event as a finale to the first LVO WEE Series. There were approximatly 60 people turned out. This was a mixture of the old faithful club members, but also a large number of the general public turning up to simply try out an orienteering event. Maybe there is something for us to learn from this - in that advertising simple events in the right places can return big dividends.

Wilbert had us running around 6-Mile Water Park on two seperate courses. There was fast running to be had on the 3.9km long course (with a total of 20m climb!). There were also plenty of opportunities for mistakes to be made. This is the true sense of sprint orienteering (or park orienteering) where every second counts - or at least that's what they tell me.

The discussion points from the event were which route choice was taken from 11 to 12, ie. along the river bank path which turned into a fight with a lot of out-of-control nettles, or the safer main track route. There was also the 10ft+ wall which had to be scaled! And also, how could we forget the medals for all finishers. All in all, a very enjoyable nights racing. There was also the fair, circus and amusements adjacent to the park to keep everyone amused.

A big thankyou must go to Wilbert for the event, and also to Bill for assistance on the night and also in the production of the map.

This is the final of the 4 May events. The next set of 5 events are now being arranged for August. Check out the preliminary details on this site. There is also the questionnaire to give your impressions of the series. All comments will be taken on board to try and make the August series even better.

Don't forget there are the club bike rides on Wednesday evening in June and July. Check out the LVO website for further details.

Until August ...
.... happy orienteering.
